Permit Technician

About the Position

The City of Hazelwood is seeking a Permit Technician to perform clerical, recordkeeping, customer
service, and permit-processing duties. This position assists with residential occupancy, building
permits, and related administrative functions under the direction of the Building Official.
A strong fit for someone who: provides courteous customer service, maintains accurate records,
communicates clearly, stays organized, and can multitask effectively.

What You Will Do
 Schedule residential occupancy inspections and issue residential occupancy permits in accordance
with the City’s Housing Code.
 Schedule and coordinate building permit, courtesy, commercial occupancy, and other inspections.
 Greet and assist visitors and callers courteously, provide information, take messages, and refer
questions to the appropriate person or department.
 Provide assistance with permits, inspection applications, and brochures and review submitted
applications for accuracy and completeness.
 Track residential inspections, permits, courtesy infraction notices, court summonses, building
inspections, and expired occupancy inspections.
 Prepare letters and memorandums, maintain the cash drawer and cash receipt journal, reconcile
receipts, and prepare monthly invoices for large apartment complexes.
 Provide administrative support to the Building Official, Building Inspector, and Code Enforcement
Officers.
 Coordinate the building permit application process, explain requirements, review paperwork, assign
permit numbers, and issue permits after plan review.
 Create, maintain, and generate reports, databases, and spreadsheets tracking monthly and fiscal-year
totals.

Minimum Qualifications
 High school diploma or equivalent.
 Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
 At least one year of general clerical and customer service experience.
 An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills,
and abilities may be considered.

Physical Requirements
 Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, calculators, printers,
photocopiers, cameras, laminators, and fax machines.
 Ability to perform sedentary to light work involving some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
 Ability to recognize similarities or differences in shapes and sounds associated with job-related
materials and tasks.

Work Environment
Work is performed under generally safe and comfortable conditions and includes repetitive keyboard use
and interactions with the public.
