About the Position

The City of Hazelwood is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to inspect building interiors, exteriors, and properties for occupancy permit compliance and to enforce municipal and property code regulations. This position works directly with residents and property owners, responds to complaints, and helps maintain safe, code-compliant neighborhoods.

A strong fit for someone who: communicates confidently with the public, applies codes consistently, exercises sound judgment, documents findings accurately, and is comfortable working both in the field and in an office.

What You Will Do
Perform interior and exterior residential occupancy permit inspections for compliance with adopted codes and ordinances.
Inspect building interiors, exteriors, fences, driveways, decks, and property for compliance with applicable municipal codes.
Issue ordinance violation warnings, citations, and court summonses.
Patrol assigned sector neighborhoods for code violations.
Respond to resident complaints, mediate disputes, and resolve neighborhood problems involving code violations.
Answer questions, provide code-related assistance and advice, interpret codes, and refer individuals to other personnel or agencies.
Testify in court as necessary.
Prepare reports, memos, notices, correspondence, court summonses, and weekly reports.
Check business licenses and occupancy permits in the Building Inspector’s absence and take appropriate action.
Prepare and serve administrative search warrants to abate nuisance violations.
Remain on call to evaluate and declare properties unfit due to fires or uninhabitable conditions.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent with vocational or technical training.
At least one year of building code, inspection, or related experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Appropriate ICC certifications and a valid Missouri driver’s license are required.
Physical Requirements
Ability to operate a computer, office equipment, camera, vehicle, and inspection-related tools.
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs while performing inspection tasks.
Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing approximately 12 to 20 pounds.
Ability to recognize differences in colors, shapes, sounds, odors, and textures associated with inspection work.

Work Environment

Work may be performed under potentially dangerous or uncomfortable conditions. The position may be exposed to temperature and noise extremes, wetness, humidity, dust, and other field conditions that can cause discomfort or create a risk of injury.
