The Code Enforcement Assistant will work under the supervision of the Neighborhood Services Manager enforcing the Landscape Management Ordinance. Specific duties include: driving throughout the city to check for ordinance violations; bending/stooping/kneeling to measure weed and grass height; verifying information on nuisance complaint forms while at site; responding to citizen complaints regarding tall grass and weeds or other environmental nuisances; conducting property searches for ownership, primarily by use of computers; preparing documents for court actions and council billing; testifying in court as needed or assigned. The Neighborhood Services Manager may also assign other duties as needed related to the work of code enforcement in the Office of Neighborhood Services. The position will end September 30, 2025.
Required ability to read and interpret ordinances, rules and regulations; must have excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare court documents; must have excellent research skills and ability to spend hours reviewing property documents; ability to deal courteously with the public, especially during sometimes adversarial situations; ability to bend, stoop, and kneel to measure weed height and check other violations; ability to work outdoors in and around noxious plants and other fumes in all types of weather conditions, including summer temperatures of more than 100 degrees. Horticulture knowledge preferred but not required; must be able to learn to identify a variety of plants. Requires use of personal vehicle for weed inspections (mileage to be reimbursed). Ability to use computers to access information and to prepare notices is required. Must have certificate of comprehensive general liability coverage (insurance) prior to hiring. Must have valid Missouri Driver’s License and excellent driving record; excellent work history.
